The Island of Bali in Indonesia is simply amazing! But did you go to Gili Islands? Also known as turtle capital of the world, islands are famous for idyllic beaches with so many ocean swings, exotic species roaming the crystal clear water, and party vibe in the evenings that make you order a cocktail and just enjoy at the beach. But most of all, you can get relax however you want!
We came from Bali (Padang Bai harbour) to Gili Trawangan with speed boat which took around 1 – 2 hours depends on calmness of the sea (and we left Islands with Eka Jaya company).
The Gili Islands are an archipelago formed by three islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air. It is another heaven on the Earth beside Bali. But what is so special?
WALK AROUND THE ISLAND
The only vehicles on the Islands are bicycles and horse carriages. No cars, no public transportation. You can walk around the islands as well. Just pure heaven and peace. Gili Trawangan is the biggest of all three, but still small.
Walking around the island takes from 1 – 2 hours. On Gili Trawangan, you should rent a bike, which you can get anywhere (do not forget to negotiable). We rented bicycles in our accommodation.
We hiked on the Hilltop for sunset view as well. There were no people and it is relaxing. Good spot to take some different photos.
YOGA IN GILI TRAWANGAN
Bali offers so many yoga classes, almost in every corner. Studios offer yoga courses to become a teacher as well. Yoga here is like religion in my opinion. If you are passionate or obsessed with yoga, you just can not miss the yoga retreat in Indonesia. Spirituality roots are home in Bali. Even if you are not in love with yoga, you will become. The lush surroundings of tropical forests or near the ocean, you will enrich your yoga experience. I found 38 health benefits for health on YOGA JOURNAL PAGE.
Mornings after I finished with yoga and bicycle back to my accommodation for breakfast:
SNORKELING TOUR AROUND THE GILI ISLANDS
It is the number 1 activity in Gili Island. With a group tour, your first visit are UNDERWATER SCULPTURES near Gili Meno. It was so many people. My suggestion is to go maybe with a private boat if you want instagrammable photos. What is more, fish here are so colorful!
Next was snorkeling on a reef corals and searching for the turtles. We saw 3 turtles. It depends on how lucky you are at that moment. Nevermind, even if you are just swimming in Gili Trawangan, you can spot them, as I did.
Lunch in Gili Air was long around 1 hour. During that time you can also walk around the island. It is small anyway.
BE CAREFUL: Sea Turtles can bite. Sea Turtles have really strong jaws and very sharp beaks with which they can bite if they sense danger around them. Anyway here, locals said they are not dangerous.
TRAWANGAN´S NIGHT MARKET
Food markets are the heart of every city or village. You can get anything. Delicious food and so many varieties, desserts, ice creams, juices,…
ADVICE: If you have stomachaches on your travel journey, GUAVA JUICE will help you for sure! Proven by myself!
About 6 p.m. daily at the market square in front of the boat pier on Gili Trawangan the night market takes place where you can eat well and cheaply. It’s impossible to miss it! Anyway if you are not a food market fan, there are restaurants all around! The late afternoon and nightlife are great here. Everybody is out, the roads are full of bikers, party vibes are on!
HORSEBACK RIDES OR RELAX ON THE BEACH
Horseback ride along the beach is a popular activity as well. But if you want just to relax on the beach, here are some good bars and restaurants: Pink Coco, Sunset Bar, local Pituq Warung, WR BB Kontemporer,…
SWINGS are along the beach where you can take photos as many as you want. Gili is really known for swings and maybe it is a good strategy to attract people.
Earthquake and tsunami hit Indonesia at the end of the year 2018 (22nd of December). More than 400 people were reported dead in western Java and southern Sumatra islands. We wanted to go to Lombok´s highest mountain – Mount Rinjani, but all paths leading to the top were still damaged. Locals told us that exists just one path only to the lake.
So instead to go on Lombok Island, we decided to explore Nusa Penida! (This was January 2020).
See you in Nusa Penida in the next post ✿
