Tumpak Sewu is known as one of the best waterfalls in Indonesia. It is overshadowed by an active volcano and the highest mountain in Java, Semeru. The name means »a Thousand waterfalls« in the Javanese language.
Trekking to Tumpak Sewu waterfall was a challenge and it was a lot of fun. We checked a lot of reviews before so we knew it what to expect it.
HOW TO GET THERE?
You can get to waterfalls in 2 ways. One is from Malang via Kepanjen and the other is via Probolinggo. We went from Malang with a bus to our accommodation Traveller Guest House and Glamping.
There is not a lot of accommodations in this area, so be careful with booking in the high season. From our accommodation, it was approximately 45 minutes to the entrance.
We set off from our accommodation around 7 am. It is recommended to come early before gets too hot. It is said that the trek to see this waterfall is not for the faint-hearted! It was not crowded at all. We met a couple of tourists, but that was all. The entrance fee is 10.000 RP and 5.000 RP for parking.
We took our time. It took us around 3 hours to go to the waterfall and Goa Tetes. When you enter the park, first you can enjoy a panoramic view of the waterfall and if it is clear also volcano Semeru.
Next, keep walking down the slope to get to the trek. It was really slippery so, be careful! It is a funny road, some stairs and it is steep indeed. Besides this, there is a path that goes through a lot of mini waterfalls (really sleepy; I went barefoot), and at the end on the bottom there is a river and you need to cross it by ladder.
After taking a bunch of photos by a waterfall, we continue to the Goa Tetes waterfall. It is said that is 1 hour walking there, but actually it is around 15 minutes. There is a cliff, a cave, and a waterfall. It was getting really hot. What I was enjoying the most, was a small natural pool where you can swim. It was real refreshment and not so cold at all.
Trekking back up was more challenging and scary. Why you will ask? Well when your path crosses a big gray snake, you get paralyzed. Almost at the top, we heard something moving. 3 seconds later, the big snake was chasing the frog.
On the entrance, there is a lot of food stands to refill yourself with some good local food.
It was a big adventure with renting scooter as well. We rented in other accommodation because our guesthouse had just bikes. It is quite an undeveloped area but really green and exotic.
