So many islands are in Thailand – more than 1400 islands – which one to choose and to visit? Phi phi islands were good choice, not the best one, but still OK because of the views from the top and snorkelling and having fun on a trip around main islands.
The Phi Phi islands are one of the most famous islands in Thailand, if not also in Asia. Phi Phi is a group of six islands. The two main islands are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. The larger and inhabited Phi Phi Don attracts hundreds of visitors to stay on its lovely shores while the smaller uninhabited Phi Phi Leh hosts stunningly beautiful bays and beaches, including the world-famous Maya Bay, which was the set where The Beach (with Leonardo Di Caprio) was filmed. An hour and a half ferryboat ride from Krabi or Phuket can take you to the main island Ko Phi Phi Don. The second island is called Ko Phi Phi Lee.
On Ko Phi Phi Don you will find three viewpoints. It takes around 30 minutes to reach the top. It is situated at an altitude of 186m. For the main point, the entrance fee is 30 Baht per person. It is two ways that lead to the top. We went from resorts through the jungle. There is a shop and a cafe at the top so make sure you take money with you (and WATER on the way up).
It overlooks the village and the two bays. For the way down, we went to the stairs. From the top you can see the turquoise waters teeming with colorful marine life.
HALF DAY TRIP AROUND ISLANDS
We took an afternoon trip from our hotel for 400 Baht per person. First, we went to a Monkey beach with long Thai boats. There were so many other boats, many people and just three monkeys. Some of them feed them with bananas; this is how you get their attention.
Next stop was snorkelling time near Viking Cave on the second main island, Ko Phi Phi Lee. Our guide stopped in nice place without other tourists. We enjoyed exploring under the water. We saw many colorful fish and also water snake. Many of the best sites are accessible only by boat, so you can still find yourself alone. Thailand is almost every year in best top 10 countries for snorkelling.
Pileh lagoon with crystal clear water surrounded by green mountains provides the perfect setting. We had time for more swimming and break. We got fresh cut pineapple. We continued to Lo Sama Bay to sail through to the famous Maya Beach. !!! Maya beach has from 2018 been closed for tourists for 3 years. !!!
It is closed to allow it to recover from the damage caused by millions of tourists that visit this place for years. Pollution, litter, boats and sun cream are the main reasons. It is estimated that more than 80% of the coral around Maya Bay has been destroyed. Maya Bay is a beautiful bay that’s sheltered by 100-meter high cliffs on three sides. Inside the bay, there are several beaches, most are small and some only exist at low tide. We stopped at one for some more snorkelling. After last stop it was almost time for sunset. We wait it on an open sea.
After sunset our last stop was swimming with plankton near Monkey beach. Amazing experience! It is like firebugs under the water. If you have this change, do not miss it!
Phi Phi Islands are great for parties. I have been there around Christmas and a lot of clubs are full of people having fun. I could say this is for sure party island. Here is no space to relax and recharge your batteries. If you want that, I suggest to visit islands on the South or on the other side, in the Gulf of Thailand.
Anyway, we had great time in Phi Phi islands. Walking through narrow, with many shops and restaurants, nice streets; friendly people, tour around islands and some parties were highlights of our visit. We experienced best sunsets again. In Thailand you can not be disappointed by sunsets for sure.
Thank you Thailand!
