City of Masks, city of love or floating city. However, you want to call it. Are you dreaming just to walk around the city and get lost? Don’t worry to get lost. Is Venice perfect and one of the most phenomenal cities in the world? It is a city where food, culture, and history offer you everything in one place. And the best thing is that all the attractions are walking distance from each other as well.
Grand Canal or Canal Grande is a 2,5 miles long water avenue, featuring palaces, luxuries hotels, fish markets, and including bridges. Grand Canal is really ” big avenue for walking”, but what is more romantic and amazing, are these narrow streets, you can get lost in. The canal is busy with water taxis, water buses, and touristic boats.
ST. MARK´S SQUARE
St. Mark´s Square (Piazza San Marco) is the other masterpiece of architecture. The main square is surrounded by Basilica, Doge Palace and Belltower (campanile). The tower is the highest observation deck with a good view all over Venice.
The Piazza San Marco is not far above sea level and during the “high water” from storm surges from the Adriatic or heavy rain, it is quick to flood. Water pouring into the drains in the Piazza runs directly into the Grand Canal.
St. Mark´s Basilica is built in Venetian-Byzantine style and has a nickname the “Church of Gold”.
Doge´s Palace is one attraction more to St. Mark´s Palace. It was a center of power, from where the Venetian Republic was ruled. If you look more carefully, you will notice that the 9th and 10th A beautiful Gothic structure that faces the Venetian lagoon, is a museum today.
Fact: Venice is located on 118 islands connected to over 400 bridges. Bridge of Signs is a bridge connection from Doge´s Palace to New Prison. It is named by prisoners who were taken to prison. They did last signs here.
One more famous bridge is Rialto Bridge across the Grand Canal. It is one of the oldest bridges in Venice.
I fly a lot from Venice airports. Recently I flew back to London and because I had a flight in the evening, it was just perfect to spend the day in Venice. Gondolas and Vaporetto are two of the main transportation. – I did not experience it yet. The gondola can be expensive but romantic for couples. A cheaper option is for sure public Vaporetto.
OTHER ISLANDS AROUND – If you are more days here in Venice, there are islands of Murano and Burano – may be a good option to explore more. Murano is known for its glass production and Burano mostly known for its colorful houses.
And do not forget to enjoy ITALIAN FOOD AND WINE.
